About
R3M The
ReliaSoft Risk, Reliability, and Maintainability
Research Alliance was officially established in November
of 2007 with a gift of over $700,000 in cash and
software support from
ReliaSoft
Corporation to the
Department of
Industrial Engineering at the
University of
Arkansas. The software donation provides engineering
students access to state-of-the-art tools in the areas
of risk, reliability and maintainability. The cash
portion of the donation will be used to purchase
computing equipment to create a collaborative research
and learning center in the areas of risk, reliability
and maintainability within the college. In
addition, the grant will be used to “seed” graduate and
undergraduate research in the respective areas.
Why do we need a Risk, Reliability, and Maintainability
Research Alliance?
• Reliability and Maintainability are critical elements
for all engineering systems. Due to the ever increasing
advancements in technology we find our systems level of
complexity growing exponentially. As complexity
increases, the tools and techniques necessary to ensure
reliability and maintainability must continue to
increase. The alliance provides a great opportunity for
industry and academia to establish a synergistic
relationship in this area in order to enhance our
ability to continue to perform multi-disciplinary
complex research in these areas that provide cost
effective, life-cycle solutions for industry.
• Risk analysis has taken on new meaning since the
events of 9/11/01 and all systems now must consider risk
and vulnerability as part of their design paradigm. The
tools provided by ReliaSoft will assist our researchers
in discovering new ways to model and analyze risk for
complex systems and prepare our students to enter the
workforce with an appreciation for such issues.
• The technical workforce is graying as the baby boomers
move toward retirement age, and there continues to be a
shortage of engineers in general. This is especially
true in the risk, reliability and maintainability areas.
Many of the members of our profession entered the
profession during the establishment of the space program
in the 60s, and the military buildup of the 70’s and
80s. As these folks leave it is becoming more difficult
to find trained and educated professionals in this area.
One of the goals of the alliance is to define and
provide educational solutions in this area for industry
so that they have an educated workforce in the areas of
risk, reliability and maintainability.
What is the Alliance's Purpose?
This alliance is designed to facilitate interaction
between industry and academia and serve as a conduit for
sharing research problems and solutions between members.
Industry members of the alliance bring relevant
industrial problems and some level of financial
resources to the alliance, the alliance will facilitate
the partnership and leveraging of resources between the
university researchers and members of the alliance to
work on these problems as well as general problems of
interest to the alliance. The vision for this research
alliance is to develop a internationally recognized
center of excellence in the area of Risk, Reliability
and Maintainability. We hope to model this alliance
after the industry & university cooperative research
centers (IUCRC) sponsored by the National Science
Foundation.
What is the Alliance's Vision?
R3M Vision: An international center of excellence
in the areas of risk, reliability and maintainability,
providing leading edge solutions to eliminate tomorrow’s
problems1
What is the Alliance's Purpose?
R3M Mission: Provide integrated solutions to
complex risk, reliability, and maintainability problems
through modeling, simulation, and analysis for
commercial, military and government applications.
